Position Title: Fire Captain
Salary: $72,000 annually
Incentive Pay: Eligible for Kentucky Fire Commission Incentive Pay of $4,300 annually upon successful completion of training requirements and contingent upon WCFD becoming an approved incentive distributor.
Retirement: Kentucky KPPA Hazardous Duty Retirement

Position Summary:
The Warren County Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Fire Captain. The Fire Captain serves as a first-line company officer responsible for supervising assigned personnel, managing emergency operations, and ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures. This position provides leadership during fire, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents and oversees daily station operations, training, and readiness.
The Fire Captain demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to the safety of personnel and the community. Duty assignments may include operations, training, logistics, and administrative supervision and may be adjusted at the discretion of department leadership.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet the following requirements at the time of appointment:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Kentucky Firefighter II certification (300/400) or IFSAC/ProBoard Firefighter II equivalent
- Hazardous Materials Operations certification (NFPA 472/1072 compliant)
- NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800
- CPR certification
- Valid Kentucky driver’s license
- Documented progressive leadership experience within a structured fire/rescue agency
Fire Officer Certification:
- Completion of Fire Officer I (IFSAC/ProBoard) preferred; Fire Officer I or equivalent must be obtained within 12 months if not currently held. Equivalent leadership training as recognized by the Kentucky Fire Commission will be accepted upon evaluation.
- For example: Preparation for Initial Company Operations, Strategy and Tactics for Initial Company Operations, and Decision Making for Initial Company Operations will serve as acceptable alternatives
EMT Requirement:
- Applicants are not required to hold Kentucky Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification at the time of hire
- All employees must obtain Kentucky EMT certification within the first 24 months of employment and maintain it throughout the entirety of employment
- Failure to obtain or maintain EMT certification within the required timeframe is grounds for termination
- The County may provide guidance or course information to assist with obtaining certification but will not cover associated costs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Kentucky or National Registry EMT certification
- Fire Officer II (IFSAC/ProBoard) certification
- Instructor I certification
- Incident Safety Officer certification
- Technical Rescue Operations certifications (rope, confined space, trench, swift water, vehicle extrication)
- Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) certification
- Apparatus operator/driver qualification and experience
- Experience in training, operational management, or station administration
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership and supervision of assigned personnel and company operations
- Directs fire suppression, rescue, and hazardous materials incident operations until relieved
- Conducts size-up, develops tactical plans, and ensures firefighter safety
- Mentors, coaches, and evaluates assigned personnel
- Maintains readiness of apparatus, equipment, and personnel
- Enforces departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations
- Conducts company-level training and participates in department-wide training initiatives
- Completes incident reports, personnel evaluations, and administrative documentation
- Engages in public education and community risk reduction programs
- Performs station management and other duties as assigned by command staff
- Serves as a conduit between the volunteer fire department leadership and Warren County
- Establishes a strong professional relationship with stakeholders to include volunteer fire departments
Automatic Disqualifiers:

- Failure to pass required background or medical evaluations
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Candidates receiving a conditional offer must successfully complete:
- Comprehensive background investigation
- Comprehensive physical evaluation
- Drug screening
- SCBA fit and functional competency evaluation
- Oral interview and any additional assessments as required
- Current and Valid Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) Card
Work Schedule:
- 40-hour work week (four 10-hour shifts) with rotating days off
- Subject to emergency recall and rotational command duty assignments
- Work performed in indoor and outdoor environments, frequently under hazardous or adverse conditions
- Must maintain physical fitness standards required for firefighting and emergency response duties
Compensation and Benefits:
- Annual Base Salary: $72,000
- Incentive Pay: Eligible for $4,300 Kentucky Fire Commission Incentive Pay annually
